If you were a superhero, what would your power be?
By Milan Lay
We recently held a truly super Meet The Kids event in Los Angeles! The theme of the event was superheroes where kids were encouraged to imagine themselves as heroes and answer the question, “If I were a superhero, what would my power be?”
Despite some gloomy weather in Los Angeles, we had a terrific turnout—the room in the IKAR Office on La Cienega was packed and full of excitement. Participating families nurtured their growing connections with the kids by participating in superhero themed activities and enjoying a delicious lunch of pizza from Upper Crust together. Everyone was eager to dig into lunch – and dig deeper into their relationships.
Soon it was time to divide into groups. The project of the day was to contribute to a “mural” of responses to the “What would my power be?” question. Kids cut out shapes of colored paper, decorated the edges, and gave some remarkable answers. Some were silly, such as the response, “My superpower is sleeping.” And others tugged at the heartstrings, like “My superpower is being myself.” As always, our kids never cease to amaze us with their unique and resilient personalities.
Following our Kidsave tradition, we ended the event by celebrating the birthdays of the month. Ka’risma and Johntae each have a February birthday (and are looking for a forever family). For kids in foster care, birthdays can pass by without much joy – and certainly without family. While we champion our kids’ journeys to find forever families, host families, and mentors, we make it a point to acknowledge their milestones and remind them they’re not alone.
About Weekend Miracles
There are many wonderful kids in our Weekend Miracles program in need of a host or adoptive families. These older kids in foster care are growing up without the stability and love that all kids need to thrive. If you’re interested in adopting or hosting an older kid, please contact us. We’re happy to answer any questions and help you get started. Email us at weekendmiracles@kidsave.org to learn more.
