Miracles Kids Celebrate Earth Day

For our April “Meet the Kids” event, we met at Servicon in Culver City for an Earth Day celebration. The day's goal was to teach kids more about our planet, have fun, and build connections between older kids in foster care and potential hosts and adoptive families.

Before the kids jumped into the activities, we kicked things off with a delicious lunch. Subway sandwiches (and Subway cookies!) awaited the hungry kiddos. They happily chose between turkey, BMT, or veggie sandwiches and sat down with friends… and possible future family!

After lunch, they burned off energy with our events of the day. The space was decorated with stations dedicated to each of the four elements – water, earth, fire, and air – and there were unique games at each station. At one table, kids made a “campfire” out of candy; at another, they potted succulents to take home. There were also some races to bring out the kids’ competitive sides: a jumping race in burlap sacks and an egg and spoon race that the kids loved. While the kids learned more about our planet in fun ways, they made connections with potential hosts and forever families.

At the end of the event, I had an opportunity to speak with Natalie, the owner of Servicon, and ask her why she thinks it’s important to open her company’s space for nonprofit events.

“It’s part of our responsibility, to not just thrive on the community, but to give back,” says Natalie. “It breaks your heart when you sit down with some of these kids and say, ‘what are you looking for?’ and they don’t say ‘I want a big car, or a big home,’ but they say, ‘I want a family.’”

We agree. That’s why we continue to do all we can to help the kids in our programs find loving forever families.

 About Weekend Miracles

There are many wonderful kids in our Weekend Miracles program in need of a mentor, host, or adoptive family. These older kids in foster care are growing up without the stability and love that all kids need to thrive.  If you’re interested in adopting or hosting an older child, please contact us. We’re happy to answer any questions and help you get started. Email us at weekendmiracles@kidsave.org to learn more.

Kidsave’s Weekend Miracles program is currently only available for Los Angeles or Houston residents.
