Dreaming Big in Texas
Author: Jade LeBlanc-Ernest
We often think about the month of January as a time for new beginnings and starting new journeys toward big goals and dreams. For kids in foster care, there is one big dream: finding a forever family. Compared to youth who age out of the system, kids who find their forever family or a strong support system are poised to have a better chance at a positive transition into adulthood.
To start 2023, Houston Weekend Miracles was able to provide the kids an opportunity to put their dreams on paper and proudly display their hopes and aspirations for the different parts of their lives. During our recent Meet the Kids event, the kids put together vision boards that described their dreams through images from magazines, patterns, and personal drawings. The mood boards started as blank poster boards, soon they were colorful representations of each
child’s unique personality.
While the kids drew their future aspirations, the families in attendance took turns getting to know each kid while learning more about their ultimate goals in life. These dreams included having a pet of their own, owning a car, playing football, and becoming superheroes. After everyone finished their vision boards, it was time for the birthday celebration!
At each event, we celebrate the kids who have had a birthday in the last month. For youth in foster care who may not have any kind of birthday party otherwise, it’s a big deal to be celebrated in this way. This month, we celebrated Ambry, Briana J., and Margarita’s birthdays with a cheery song and cake for everyone.
About Weekend Miracles
Join Kidsave as we work to make dreams come true for older kids in foster care. There are many wonderful kids in our Houston Weekend Miracles program in need of hosts or adoptive families.
These older kids in foster care are growing up without the stability and love that all kids need to thrive. If you’re interested in adopting or hosting an older kid, please contact us. We’re happy to answer any questions and help you get started.
