Our Weekend Miracles Virginia program kicked off this month with a holiday party to remember! The Weekend Miracles program has been connecting older kids in foster care with mentors and adoptive families since 2005 in LA and 2020 in Houston, and we are thrilled to be launching this life-changing program in Virginia.
A small but merry group gathered at the local American Legion in Spotsylvania, Virginia for a day of holiday-themed fun.
First, to break the ice, everyone played a quick round of board games while having a delicious lunch from Cracker Barrel. Twelve-year-old Braiden claimed victory in ‘What Do You Meme: Family Edition’ while 14-year-old Johnathan opted to lead his group in using the conversation cards to get to know each other better.
After lunch, the party really kicked off! The day’s activities included building Christmas tree-towers out of cups, racing to scoop up marshmallow snowballs, creating greeting cards, and decorating gingerbread houses. The day flew by, and when the time came to wrap up, everyone was reluctant to leave.
Tammy Yarborough, the Weekend Miracles Virginia Program Manager, felt the first event was truly special.
“It was heart-warming to witness the tenacity of our youth who are willing to open their hearts to possible connections despite the previous obstacles they’ve endured,” said Tammy. “The Weekend Miracles program provides a new opportunity for older kids in foster care in Virginia to find forever families or lasting connections. It is our hope that no child will age out of care without at least one caring, trusted adult in their life to support them and remind them that they matter and are loved.”
