As Kidsave celebrates its 25th anniversary, we are speaking with Kidsave alumni—many who have families of their own now—retired staff, friends, dedicated volunteers, and families formed through Kidsave across the years as we celebrate 25 years of love and family.

Eric and Chris Hanna’s story is one of love, family, and the power of the Summer Miracles program. When they first learned about Kidsave, the Hannas were looking for a way to adopt a child from Colombia. Having joined different Facebook groups dedicated to Colombian adoptions and hosting, they decided on Kidsave as their best option. They started with winter hosting, and during this time, they saw Kevin’s profile. Kevin mentioned in his profile that he wanted to live in the city, and they were in the suburbs, so they almost didn’t try to host him. It was such a strong connection to Kevin, they decided to give it a try.
“We wanted to make sure that the child we hosted would feel loved and welcome in our home,” said Chris.
When Kevin arrived, Eric and Chris were nervous, excited, and unsure of what to expect. They had prepared their home and hearts for him but didn’t know how he would feel about them. The first few days were challenging as Kevin adjusted to a new environment and a new family. But soon, he started to warm up to them, and they felt like they had known him forever.
During their time together, they went on adventures, exploring New York City and bonding over shared experiences. “We were able to celebrate Dia de las Velitas on December 7th, which was pretty cool,” said Eric. This public holiday in Colombia, Day of the Little Candles, was a way to experience Kevin’s culture together. “It was new for us, so we got to celebrate that with him, and then we got to celebrate Christmas as well.”
Eric and Chris had a strong connection with Kevin during the hosting period, but they had to say goodbye when it ended, and Kevin returned to Colombia. Eric and Chris were determined to bring him home for good, though, and they persevered through the challenges of the adoption process. The distance did not stop them from connecting with Kevin as they would Facetime with him almost every day until the process was complete. Finally, after the adoption was finalized, they were able to bring Kevin to his new home in the United States.
Kidsave’s Summer Miracles Program connects older orphans with warm host families during a 5-week summer visit, fostering love, understanding, and lasting bonds. Today, Eric and Chris are proud parents to Kevin and are grateful for the Summer Miracles program and the support they received from Kidsave. “Hosting Kevin was one of the most rewarding experiences of our lives, and we are so grateful for the opportunity to be a part of the Summer Miracles program,” said Chris. They know their journey as Kevin’s parents is just the beginning, and they are excited to see what the future holds for them as a family.
About Summer Miracles
Our Summer Miracles program gives older orphans who are overseas a chance at a family. The Summer Miracles program provides older kids with no possibility of reunification – and little likelihood of adoption in their home country because of their age – the opportunity to stay in the U.S. for five weeks in the summer (three weeks in the winter). While here, the kids stay with host families, learn about American culture, create lifelong memories, and connect with potential forever families. Book a call with our team to learn more.
